Anchorage, Alaska (KINY) - The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation is reminding Alaskan boaters "don't poo in the blue."
DEC Commissioner, Jason Brune, said it's a fun way to remind boaters that it is illegal to dump raw, untreated sewage in Alaskan waters per the Clean Water Act. This includes freshwater bodies and up to three miles from the shoreline in the ocean.
"We want to make sure that folks are protecting our waters and being mindful that the contamination that comes with raw sewage can have impacts on fish, shellfish beds, and can transmit diseases to other people that use that water," said Brune in an interview with News of the North.
There is a fine of up to $2,000 for releasing raw sewage into state of Alaska waters. Brune said that anything that is normally put down a toilet is included in the definition of sewage.
