Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - CBJ Docks and Harbors was able to find a buyer for the vessel that, at one point in its history, had been sold for just one dollar.
The Red Emma is a former navy vessel that was built in 1944. Docks and Harbors in its listing said "it would be a great project for the right person and could be converted for many uses such as a fish tender or be parted out for the engines and other parts." The minimum bid was set at $5,000.
Port Director Carl Uchytil said the first owner came over from Sitka and had plans to fix it up. He had brought it into Statter Harbor but failed to make the monthly rent. He sold the boat for $1.
The next owner didn't make the appropriate mortgage payments. Uchytil said it ended up in Docks and Harbor's lap to dispose of.
Uchytil said they were fortunate enough to get a buyer on public surplus who was willing to pay $1,000 for the right to buy it from Docks and Harbors. He believes the buyer's plans are to take it down to Wrangell and refurbish it.
"We're glad that we're not having to spend a lot of money to dispose of it. 73-foot vessels would have been several, maybe 10s of 1000s of dollars to dispose of."
