Derby weights are in, though Coho catches are low this year

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Numbers have been revealed about the total weight of fish caught during the 76th Golden North Salmon Derby.

The total weight was 5,533 pounds of Cohos and 2,048 pounds of King Salmon this year, resulting in $16,662.85 in total sales.

According to derby board president Ryan Beason, fish sales were down significantly this year, with the biggest reason being the lack of Cohos.

Typically all funds go to the scholarship foundation, but this isn’t determined until the board's September meeting.  There are rare instances where some of the funds will be held to offset derby costs.

Beason added that he doesn't expect this will be needed and that the derby should be giving all of the fish sales proceeds to the scholarship foundation.
