Death of former Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard mourned

Juneau, ALASKA (KINY) - The Coast Guard is mourning the death of its second ever Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard who once served in Juneau.

A Coast Guard release says Phillip F. Smith passed away on June 22.

Smith took the post as the enlisted advisor to the Coast Guard Commandant on August 1, 1973.  The release says Smith was able to stay connected to the enlisted ranks throughout the service and maintained a liaison with his counterparts in the other four armed services through the end of his tour in 1977.

Smith enlisted in the Coast Guard on September 20, 1949.  While in Alaska, he worked in the Personnel Division of the 17th Coast Guard District.

Smith was buried Tuesday at the Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, Washington.
