Cruise lines delay start of Alaska season

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Princess Cruises suspended global operations for 60 days while Viking Cruises canceled sailings through April 30.

Princess Cruises' suspension lasts from today through May 10.

President Jan Swartz said the company remains committed to the health, safety, and well-being of all who sail with them.

"While this is a difficult business decision, we firmly believe it is the right one and is in alignment with our company's core values," she said in a video posted to YouTube today.

Viking was the first major cruise line to suspend operations in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Kirby Day, Government and Community Relations for Holland America Group for Princess Cruises, Holland America Line and Seabourn, in an email, said this would impact the Grand Princess, Ruby Princess and Star Princess first cruises of the season.

They were due to visit Juneau on May 6, May 11, and May 12.
