Crimson Bears Softball Girls Open State With Wins

Anchorage, Alaska (KINY) - The Juneau-Douglas High School Yadaa.at Kalé softball team opened the 2021 Alaska School Activities Association Softball State Championships on Thursday at Anchorage’s Cartee Fields with a pair of wins, defeating North Pole 19-6 and Homer 19-11.

  The two wins in the round robin portion of the tournament for seeding mean that the Crimson Bears play at 2:45 p.m. Friday against the winner of Kodiak and North Pole.

  “I feel like we are in a pretty good spot,” Juneau-Douglas coach Lexie Razor said. “The girls were hitting consistently. The other teams are going to be good hitters so we have to play good defense. We felt like we did well today.”

  Sophomore Mariah Schauwecker went 4-5 at the plate against North Pole, with five RBI and three runs scored to lead the Crimson Bears.

  Sophomore Saelyr Hunt and junior Kaia Smith had three RBI apiece, sophomore Gloria Bixby, and freshmen Tristan Oliva and Kiah Yadao one each.

  Hunt, Oliva and Bixby had three hits each, Yadao two and Smith one.

  Hunt, senior Mackenzie Jackson and Bixby scored three runs each, sophomore Anna Dale, Oliva and Yadao two each, and sophomore Carlynn Casperson one.

  Yadao started against North Pole and threw four innings, allowing six hits and four runs, striking out seven batters and walking one. Schauwecker closed for one inning, allowing three hits and two runs and walking two.

  Razor said the Crimson Bears’ hitting was key for the day.

  “We had some flounders and errors defensively but the girls never gave up,” Razor said. “They would get the out and then we would just go back and hit. They did really consistent. We set goals each inning and they rose to those goals, which was great.”

  Yadao went 4-4 at the plate against Homer, with three RBI and four runs scored.

  Hunt had five RBI, Dale, Jackson and Bixby two each, Schauwecker, Oliva and senior Jojo Griggs one each.

  Hunt, Dale and Oliva had three hits each, Schauwecker and Jackson two each.

  Hunt, Schauwecker and Oliva scored three runs each, Dale and Jackson two apiece, and Smith and Griggs one apiece.

  Yadao started and went three innings against Homer, allowing five hits and eight runs, striking out three and walking two. Schauwecker closed for two innings, allowing five hits and three runs, and striking out two.

  Winning both their pool play games means that the Crimson Bears get a bye on Friday morning.

  “We could possibly only have to play one game,” Razor said. “If we win the game tomorrow (Friday) then we only have to play one and we are in the championship game on Saturday.”

  Ketchikan also won both of their round robin games on Thursday, defeating Delta Junction 7-6 and Kodiak 13-5. The Kings will play at 2:45 p.m. Friday against the winner of Homer and Delta Junction.
