COVID community risk level lowered to minimal

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The City and Borough of Juneau Emergency Operations Center has reduced the community risk to Level 1 Minimal.

That means there is no masking requirement within the city and borough.  But a release from city hall explains that at that level wearing a mask is recommended in indoor public areas, especially for those who are at risk or those who live with people at high risk for severe illness.

For now, masking remains required in CBJ facilities.  The release says internal policies are under review and a modification to this requirement is expected later this week.

The release also notes that exemption requests for large indoor gatherings are no longer required.

The change was spurred by improving risk indicators across the board, including a declining number of COVID-19 cases in Juneau, stable hospital capacity, high community vaccination rates, and the availability of high-quality masks, tests, and therapeutics to prevent and treat the disease.

The change puts Juneau in line with new guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
