Coast Guard, good Samaritan assist endangered boat

Sitka, Alaska (KINY) - Three people were rescued safely after a fishing vessel took on water Friday.

The US Coast Guard sent an MH-60 helicopter crew from Air Station Sitka along with the Coast Guard Cutter Bailey Barco to assist the fishing vessel Tamarack.

The vessel began to take on water about 35 miles west of Sitka Saturday.

The Coast Guard delivered a dewatering pump to the ship to assist the three-member crew.

The good Samaritan vessel Pacific Bounty also responded to an urgent marine information broadcast to assist the crew.

The coast guard towed the Tamarack to Sitka where it was safely moored.

The first mayday call came to watchstanders in the Sector Juneau command center on Friday.  The three-member crew donned survival suits and used a dewatering pump on board to try and remove the water until help could arrive.
