Coalition to form focused on southeast elder care

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The Juneau Economic Development Council is working with the Juneau Commission on Aging as they establish a regional Southeast Eldercare Coalition.

Their goal is to bring eldercare providers from across Southeast together to identify and solve mutual issues, share program information, and be a collaborative force for change.

JEDC Executive Director Brian Holst spoke about the effort while a guest on Action Line.

"The entire issue of what we do with our elders is an issue that is not just up to the Juneau commission on aging, but many of us in Juneau are aware that our population is aging, we want our seniors to be able to age here in Juneau," he said. "But there are challenges to that, one of the major ones is the services that are available to support these elders. So we are going to create, with lots of partners, an Elder Care Coalition."

He was asked how they hope to get other southeast communities interested.

"We've been reaching out to them as well, and I think Juneau, as a hub for this region, it often falls on us be in a position to assist our smaller communities, and so that's the spirit that we're engaging in as well. Many of the services that we could provide in Juneau, we're hoping we could also help others to provide other communities," he said. "And I think in the end, if being in a slightly larger community, but at least staying in the same region, that's better for many families than having to have the seniors in their life move to the lower 48 or much further away. So there's a lot of coordination that we want to do with communities throughout the region."

Their first meeting will be on Friday the 22nd from 10 am to noon. Holst says they are looking for institutions to participate but individuals are welcome as well. He said that interested entities can contact JEDC for details on how to get involved.
