UAS 2016 Commencement wrapped up last weekend.

"We're coming off a beautiful weekend of Commencement activities. I had the pleasure of traveling to our Sitka campus and then the Ketchikan campus on Saturday to celebrate the accomplishments of our graduates there. Then here in Juneau we had about 800 people in the room celebrating the accomplishments of our Juneau based students. We had the Mount Juneau Tlingit Dancers performing and bringing everyone into the room and it was just a really terrific celebration. That's really why the university exists, is to transform lives and prepare people to go out into the workforce and really be productive for their communities and families."

Chancellor Rick Caufield also had a special mention of this year's Student Commencement Speaker, "I wanted to mention our student commencement speaker this year was Jasper Nelson, who is from Craig on Prince of Whales Island, he was selected as our student speaker. He came to UAS and talked about how coming from a very small community it was a little intimidating coming into the big city here in Juneau but over time he became more and more active in our student events and activities. So we celebrated his accomplishment of earning his masters degree in teaching and his hope is to go back to his hometown of Craig and become a teacher. So that is exactly what we love to see, our local Alaskans getting the degrees and certifications they need so they can go back and be productive members of their own community. It was a great celebration."
