CEO of Juneau's hospital set to lead statewide organization

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The chief executive officer of Bartlett Regional Hospital in Juneau becomes the chair of the Alaska Hospital and Nursing Home Association next month.

Chuck Bill was asked on Action Line what he hopes to accomplish.  He said one thing on his list is to create an understanding within the State Department of Health and Social Services and the Legislature that all hospitals aren't born equal.

Bill said you hear stories about the big hospitals in Anchorage turning big profits which spurs lawmakers to think they can cut back on Medicaid or other programs without causing a big problem.

But Bill said smaller hospitals like his in Juneau are barely keeping the doors open.  If you cut five percent out of Medicaid, which Bill said is what the Legislature  did last year, they cut half of their business.

Bill said probably what the state will end up with is a two tiered payment structure for the state for the urban hospitals versus the rural hospitals.
