CCFR rescues person from Mendenhall River

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The water rescue was the third special team's rescue in the past three weeks.

Capital City Fire Rescue responded to an area across from Melvin Park around 6:30 pm Sunday.

The first arriving unit was able to throw a rope to the person until more help could arrive.

The crews used a chainsaw to clear the limbs of a strainer log and then used a roof ladder to reach the victim.

The rescue was a race against time as the cold waters posed a risk to the person in the water.

The victim did wear a personal flotation device.

CCFR advised residents who are outdoors more during the pandemic to prepare for the unexpected and call 911 if an emergency or injury occurs.
