CBJ sends out PSA to check vessels

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Heavy rain forecast to commence Wednesday has spurred the CBJ Docks and Harbors Department to issue a warning to owners of boats that use their harbors.

Harbormaster Matt Cresswell said on Action Line; "a lot more boats in the water than are in the winter or early in the spring, and folks might not come down and check their vessels when they put them in the water, they're not used to having that in their daily routine but we're expecting through probably midday on Friday or Friday evening, that one to three inches of rain can really build up quick in a boat." He added that it doesn't take much once it starts moving on part of the boat, make it unstable, and that they often deal with vessels that take on a little too much water in these rain events and end up starting to sink.

So the harbormaster is asking boat owners to make sure mooring lines are secure, pumps are operating, and that their vessel is not collecting rainwater.
