CBJ declares salmon emergency

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The CBJ Assembly declared an economic disaster due to COVID-19 and poor regional returns on all salmon species.

Southeast Alaska has experienced one of the worst fishing seasons on record.  The COVID-19 pandemic has also reduced fish prices around the world.

The pandemic also hurt the tourism industry with many local residents unable to find work this year.

The Department of Labor reports job losses of 7,400 in southeast Alaska in the past year.

The declaration helps make the CBJ eligible for disaster funds should they be allocated by the federal government.
