Burglary & property crime up again in Juneau last year

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Juneau Police Chief Ed Mercer unveiled preliminary crime statistics from 2017 on Action Line Wednesday.

He said burglary and property crimes continued to increase.  It said it looks like those crimes will be about six percent from the previous year.

The chief was asked to what he attributed the increase.  "I think, as we talked about in the past, we have a drug issue in our community that is a reason why a lot of these property crimes and burglaries are occurring within our community."

Chief Mercer added that the overall crime rate has flattened out.

The chief said the department needs a full complement of officers to better address the crime rate.  Right now he said the department is down eight officers as recruitment efforts are ongoing to fill those positions.
