Borough discusses new Attorney

Haines, Alaska (KINY) The Haines Borough Assembly put out Request for Proposals to see if there are attorneys interested in representing them.

Borough Manager Debra Schnabel said they just want to test the waters and this does not mean a change will be made, "That may be the best way to evaluate the legal counsel that you have to see if anyone else is interested in becoming the borough attorney.  Then we can evaluate what we have against what is possible and make a decision."

Brooks Chandler of Anchorage has been the borough attorney for the past eight years.

Schnabel said a change in attorney could be a good thing, "In some municipalities it is good every once in awhile to turn things around a little bit and see if you can get new legal counsel for whatever reason.  It is just a process we are going through right now, curiosity more than anything else is driving it."

Schnabel said Haines has had a tough history in politics and some have questioned the legal advise they have obtained, "Haines is coming out of a troubled couple of years with a recall election and there are some who feel there could have been different or better advice for the community through those troubling times."
