Boater Assisted by Coast Guard Near Port Protection

Juneau, AK (KINY) - A minor rescue of a man whose boat was having engine troubles and wound up on the rocks near Port Protection on Saturday.

According to a Coast Guard press release, a small-boat crew from the Coast Guard Cutter Anacapa rescued a 43-year-old man after he was stranded on the Barrier Islands. The man and his dinghy was transported to Port Protection. Watchstanders had apparently overheard the call for help between the man and the crew of teh Deer Harbor 2, a good Samaritan vessel. The Deer Harbor 2 was unable to assist, which is where the Anacapa came into play, but they were able to provide some valuable information for the Coast Guard.

“With the information provided from the crew of the Deer Harbor 2and the Alaska State Troopers we were quickly able to respond,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class Michael Florkowski, a Sector Juneau watchstander. “Diverting the crew of the Anacapa, who were patrolling nearby, allowed us to transport the man to safety.”
