Ben Huff's "Seven Doors of Doom."

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The last chance to see Atomic Island at the Alaska State Museum is Saturday, January 29.

Photographer Ben Huff’s new work is a portrait of the abandoned WWII and Cold War Naval outpost on the Aleutian Island of Adak. The island, instrumental in the disruption of a mainland advance during WWII, and later as a nuclear submarine surveillance post, was abandoned by the Navy in 1997.

At its height, the island housed over 6,000 people, today fewer than 100 call Adak home full-time. Huff uses his own large-format color photographs, mixed with archival images from the Alaska State Library, to show the past and present of a forgotten island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

Huff will provide an in-person exhibition walk-through this Saturday, January 29 at noon.

Ben Huff is one of six artists selected for the Alaska State Museum 2020-2023 Solo Artist Exhibition Series, along with artists Alison Bremner Naxshageit, Sonya Kelliher-Combs, Gail Priday, Jannah Sexton-Atkins, and Mitch Watley.
