Juneau, ALASKA (KINY) - Glacier Bay National Park warns that two young black bears have been seen in the developed area of Bartlett Cove over the past five weeks.
A release from the park says they have been seen at Glacier Bay Lodge trying to access the trash area, on the boardwalk and under the buildings. One entered an unoccupied residence last week. It went through a screen door to obtain food. A bear also attempted to break into a truck containing empty compost buckets and caused damage to the vehicle's mirrors and fenders.
Staff is taking several measures to discourage their behavior. Hazing methods include yelling, chasing, paint balls, slingshots and non-lethal shotgun beanbag rounds.
There have been no reports of aggressive behavior towards people from these bears, but officials urge people to take precautions. The release encourages people to learn what to do if they encounter a bear and consider carrying bear pepper spray.
It's advised that food, trash and other potential attractants be properly stowed. Doors and windows should be closed. People are also advised to make noise and pay attention to your surroundings.
