Ban on smoking becomes law

Anchorage, Alaska (KINY) Governor Bill Walker signed a bill that bans smoking in the workplace, bars, restaurants and other public places.

The bill does allow communities to opt out of the proposed law via local elections.  Juneau already has a similar smoking ban.  This will affect a number of rural areas in the state.

The law will become effective on October 1.  It bans smoking on buses, cabs, office buildings, hotels, restaurants, bars and shops.  it also restricts outdoor smoking in certain public areas.
