Assembly committee agendas for Monday discussed by the mayor

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Two Assembly committees meet Monday.

Mayor Ken Koelsch said  said on Action Line that the Committee of the Whole will be talking about public safety and police recruitment and rention.

The mayor has some budget proposals he's putting forth to enhance recruitment and retention of officers.  "The first four things I have on there are investigative staff; prosecution support staff;  video camera grants; and freeing up Community Service Officers a little bit."  The mayor added that could perhaps mean contracting out parking enforcement duties.    He said those ideas need to be discussed with the police department before they are implemented.

Homelessness is also on that agenda.  The mayor feels progress is being made on that issue.  "We are going forward and that's the important part" he said.

The panel will also take up a proposed ordinance to amend the Land Use Code as it relates to variances.

That meeting gets underway at 6 p.m. in Assembly Chambers at City Hall.

The Public Works and Facilities Committee is scheduled to convene at Noon in the same location.

Advertising on Capital Transit buses highlights that agenda.

The committee will also be introduced to the new Public Works and Engineering Department Director.  Mike Vigue (Vig-you) replaces Roger Healy who has retired.  Vigue has been working as the director of the Division of Program Development in the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities.
