Angoon mayor says some dancers won't attend Celebration 2022

The crowd gathered for Celebration 2018 at Elizabeth Peratrovich Hall in Juneau.

Angoon, Alaska (KINY) - Angoon Mayor Maxine Thompson revealed on the KINY Morning Show that some dance groups from her community will not be attending Celebration 2022.

Celebration 2020 went virtual when COVID-19 hit in 2020. Now, with a recent spike in cases, Thompson its better to be safe than sorry.

"So, we've been sitting and watching ... but at this point, we're going to stay home, and we heard that Kake is doing the same, I'm not sure," Thompson said. "It's something that we really needed to do. You know, we really need to go to celebration, but we will not take any chances and endanger our elders, or the little ones, the babies."

However, according to resident Chenara Johnson, two dance groups, the Aangoon Yatx'i, and Xootsnoowu Dachaxanx'i Yan, will attend as representatives from Angoon.

Celebration is held biannually in Juneau.
