Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The CBJ Docks and Harbors Board will be updated at tonight's (Thursday's) meeting on the Amalga Harbor Boat Launch.
An additional public meeting was held earlier this month, according to Port Director Carl Uchytil, who said about 35 members of the public attended. Among those, he said it was ten to one against any infrastructure improvements. Uchytil said that is one piece of the public input.
He'll confer with the board on what the next step should be.
The preferred alternative following the initial round of public meetings was to extend the boarding float to allow additional vessels to tie up there.
The new kiosk at Marine Park is nearly ready. Uchytil said they just received word that they expect the kiosk to be turned over to them on or about May 8.
The board will be asked for additional funding to complete the project. When the contractor started excavating for the foundation Uchytil said there were some "unknown site conditions", as he put it. There was a drainage issue and there was a communications vault there that they weren't aware of.
An information item on the agenda deals with an historic determination for Harris and Aurora Harbors. Uchytil explained that they are working with the Corps of Engineers to do maintenance dredging at the harbors. The corps is required to go through a National Environmental Protection Act procedure and make a determination if there is anything of historical significance at the harbors. Uchytil said the corps made a determination that there wasn't and submitting that determination to the state historian preservation officer.
The Docks and Harbors Board meeting is scheduled to convene at 5 p.m. in Assembly Chambers at City Hall.
