Alaska House punts next session to Saturday morning

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The Alaska House of Representatives have canceled their Friday session and re-scheduled their next floor meeting to Saturday, Jan. 19.

The session had been scheduled to take place Friday at 1 p.m. Instead, lawmakers will hold a technical session at 10 a.m. Saturday morning.

The House was able to get their house in order on Thursday -- but not until three days of wrangling for who would be Speaker Pro-Tem had transpired.

Nome's Neil Foster, a Democrat, was elected as Speaker Pro-Tem on a 35-4 vote. The House had 39 members present at the vote, which preceded House District 13 member Sharon Jackson's swearing in.

Republican Rep. Dave Talerico nominated Rep. Mark Neuman, who lost the vote 19-20.

The House now has a full complement of 40 members and still needs to select a permanent speaker.
