Admiralty Island plane crash explained

    Juneau, Alaska (KINY) The National Transportation Safety Board released a final report on a plane crash on August 9, 2008, that claimed two lives.

    Brian Andrews, the Deputy Commissioner of the Department of Revenue, and his son, Brandon, died in the crash.

    The NTSB determined that the pilot's decision to continue visual flight into an area of instrument meteorological conditions, that resulted in the pilot experiencing a loss of visual reference and subsequent controlled flight into terrain.  A contributing factor was the pilot's self-induced pressure to complete the flight.

    The wreckage was discovered about nine years after the accident by a hunter in densely-forested steep terrain about 1.25 miles northwest of the north end of Young Lake.  Andrews and his two sons had gone to the area on a camping trip.  The other son had been dropped off at an airport.  The father had returned to the lake to retrieve some camping gear.

    Investigators found the crash occurred about five minutes after the departure from the lake.  The NTSB also found there was no evidence of mechanical problems.

    The report said the younger son said the weather was open on the north end of the lake but closed on the south end of the lake.  They ruled the pilot likely encountered low visibility shortly after departure and crashed into a mountain.

    Due to the decayed condition of the body, investigators could not determine whether a medical condition played a role in the incident.

    Lead investigator Michael Hodges released the final report on October 10th.

    The NTSB said there was light drizzle, moderate mist, winds of five miles per hour and three miles visibility in the area when the crash occurred.
