Local historian and City Museum volunteer, Jim Geraghty, will lead walking tours of the Treadwell Historical Trail at Sandy Beach. The Treadwell Mine tour tells the story of what was once the largest gold mining operation in the world. Beginning in 1881 when John Treadwell purchased French Pete’s Paris Claim located on the site of what is now known as the Glory Hole, the mine evolved from a single gold claim to four mines, five mills and a bustling community of workers, hard rock miners, and their families, complete with stores, mess halls, bunkhouses, a marching band and even Alaska’s first indoor swimming pool. Over its 40 year operation between 1882 and 1922, the Treadwell Complex mined nearly $70 million in gold.

Tickets include a free copy of the Treadwell Historic Trail Guide, a pass for free admission to the City Museum, and a 20% discount coupon on select items in the Museum Store. This popular local tour sells out quickly
