Out of Thin Air - FREE Film Event Showcasing High-Altitude Charity Cycle in the Himalayas!

After six gruelling days covering over 600km with a total elevation gain of 26,000ft, a team of six riders, including Juneau resident Denise Wiltse, completed a challenging high-altitude cycle over Khardung La Pass and Chang La Pass - two of the world’s highest mountain passes.

You’re invited to watch the incredible film, Out of Thin Air, on December 1st at the Gold Town Theatre and witness firsthand how gruelling and emotional the experience was for all six riders. This is a free event!

The team wasn’t riding to check off an item from their bucket list but to raise money for children's education in Nepal and India as part of a fundraising campaign for Himalayan Life.

When the going got tough, they remembered the children and families they were riding for.

“This is incredibly hard,” said Daniel Burgi, CEO of Himalayan Life, via an emotional video on day one. “The air is so thin,” he said while labouring to breathe. “I’m thinking of the road workers. I’m thinking of the kids. They are always in that. For us, it’s just a moment, just a day. But that is altitude. We can do this.”

    And they did.

On September 10th, the Altitude Team arrived in Leh at Himalayan Life’s Ladakh Children’s Home for migrant families. Then, with the cheers and support of the Nepalese children, they began their ride.

For the next six days, they navigated the challenging mountain roads, the extreme altitude, and the thin air.
“I wanted to ride for Himalayan Life,” said Wiltse, “because I want people in my life to see what is
happening in this remote location. That there is hardship and danger, but there is also beauty.
And there is transformation occurring. People can be active in supporting this transformation, and
I’m just choosing my activity to be a little more physically demanding.”
Along the way, the team encountered countless labourers on dusty mountain roads whose existence is precarious and dangerous beyond our comprehension. These workers are constantly exposed to the thin air, the extreme altitude, the cold, the vicious wind, and the dust. They receive marginal pay. They have no access to health care or education services for their children.

“It is our desire,’ said Burgi, “that the Altitude Ride can serve in a small way to bring about change to those families by generating opportunities and funds for the education of their children.”

On day six, the riders, pushing through extreme exhaustion, completed Altitude: The Ride for Himalayan Life and were greeted with cheers from the Nepalese community.

The evening will consist of a keynote address by CEO Daniel Burgi with stories from other Altitude cyclists, including local resident Wiltse. Learn more about how this small charity is nurturing, protecting and educating children in the Himalayas while watching an incredible and emotional film.
Tickets are not required. The event starts at 6:30 pm at the Gold Town Theatre, 171 Shattuck Way #109, Juneau, Alaska.
