    DEADLINE EXTENSION

Juneau CARES Act Nonprofit Grants Deadline Extended to

    October 21, 2020

The application period opened August 25th for the $3 million Nonprofit Sustainability Grant Program, administered by the Juneau Community Foundation under agreement with the City & Borough of Juneau. The grants will be based on each applicant’s revenue loss and additional expenses due to the COVID-19 public health emergency.

The $3 million appropriated by the Juneau Assembly for assistance to nonprofits comes from the federal CARES Act legislation, distributed by the state to cities and boroughs across Alaska.

“The Juneau Community Foundation is pleased to be able to assist in this opportunity to distribute these funds and contribute to the benefit our community,” stated Amy Skilbred, Executive Director.

The new application deadline is Ocotober 21 at 5 p.m. Applications are available online at the Juneau Community Foundation: www.juneaucf.org/ or by emailing caresactgrant@juneaucf.org.

There are five levels of maximum grant awards, based on a nonprofit’s annual revenues, ranging from a grant of up to $5,000 for nonprofits with annual revenue of less than $25,000, to as much as $99,000 for nonprofits with annual revenues of more than $1 million. Any funding already received by a nonprofit under the City & Borough Business Stabilization Grant program would be deducted from the maximum award under the nonprofit grant program.

Eligibility and application requirements include: a broad variety of IRS-certified nonprofits (the application material includes more information); the nonprofit must have been operating in Juneau since Feb. 15, 2020; and nonprofits requesting more than $5,000 will be required to provide further details on the amount of lost revenue and higher expenses due to COVID-19.

Nonprofits that already have received other CARES Act assistance, such as through federal or state programs, are still eligible for the City & Borough funding, but the Juneau money cannot be used to cover the same expenses or losses as those other grants.

In appropriating $3 million from Juneau’s share of CARES Act funding, the Assembly ordinance stated: “COVID-19 has caused severe economic harm to nonprofits in the City & Borough of Juneau because some nonprofits closed or severely limited operations, (while) other nonprofits have had a substantial increase in demand for services due to COVID-19. … Failing to protect economically vulnerable nonprofits from the severe loss of revenue or severe increases in provided services” would damage the community’s economic and social services network”.
