Woman survives plunge into Gastineau Channel

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - A woman was rescued from Gastineau Channel Sunday night.

Assistant Fire Chief Chad Cameron says the call came in at about 7:30.  When they arrived, he says they spied the woman beyond the pilings at Marine Park.  He says the  woman's head was partially submerged.

Two members of his crew donned dry suits and brought the woman to shore.  She was breathing, but unconscious, he says.  Cameron says there was no way to get the woman up the ten foot ladder there, so they called in their rescue boat from the Glacier Station.  The rescue boat took her to the Coast Guard dock where she was loaded on to an ambulance and taken to Bartlett Regional Hospital for treatment.

The woman's identity was not released.  It's not known how she ended up in the drink.
