Craig, Alaska (KINY) The City of Craig has their eyes on federal infrastructure dollars being made available by the Trump Administration.
The Craig City council listed six local projects that could qualify for federal funding. The list includes a $4 million fire h all and ems building, improvements in their water and sewer systems and a chum salmon enhancement project at Port Saint Nicholas. They want to harvest 8 million chum salmon and release
them. Another $12.3 million for development of the cannery property and harbor construction is their top capital improvement project
They also approved an increase in fees from $10 to $15 per day for impounded animals served by the prince of Wales Animal welfare society.
They approved an extension of the lease with HOPE, Helping Ourselves Prevent Emergencies, for $25 per month, to use the old clinic building. They are the only domestic violence and sexual assault prevention program on Prince of Wales island.
Craig also has hired a new police officer who is expected to start work in late February.
The community will host the Prince of Wales Island mining symposium on April 25-26.
The council also endorsed an increase in the harvest of wolves to 30 percent of the estimated population on Prince of Wales island and
Islands west of there. The current harvest is 20 percent. 52 wolves were harvested in 2012 and only seven in 2015. Members say
they have seen more wolves in Craig in the past year. The South East Alaska subsistence regional advisory council will discuss the issue
at a meeting in Juneau on February 13.
