Troopers release more info on deadly shooting

Pilot Station, Alaska (KINY) Dwight Heckman, 27, was shot when Troopers tried to arrest him on assault charges.

Heckman had been accused of assaulting a woman and firing gunshots at her.   She was not seriously injured.

Troopers tried to contact Heckman as he drove an all-terrain vehicle, he pulled a handgun, put it to his head and ran into the woods, a trooper dispatch said.

The dispatch said four Troopers later exchanged shots with Heckman in the wooded area, Daron Cooper, a 10 year veteran, Charles Withers, a five year veteran, Investigator Shayne Calt, a 14 year veteran, and Investigator Curtis Vik, a 16 year veteran of the agency.

An autopsy will determine the cause of death and the investigation is ongoing, the dispatch added.
