Troopers end standoff with chemicals

Fairbanks, Alaska (KINY) A suspect caught on fire but survived a standoff with police.

Alaska State Troopers said Jeffery Whaley, 35, of Fairbanks, was found slumped over in the driver's seat of a GMC truck near a convenience store on Badger Road.  He was armed with a handgun and had his finger on the trigger and a bottle of beer next to him.

Troopers said crews responded, tried to convince him to exit the truck but were unsuccessful.  Troopers also reported they brought in an armored rescue vehicle, pinned Whaley's truck in place and launched chemical agents to get him to exit the truck.

Troopers went on to state that the less-lethal munition, discharged in the truck and caught his clothing on fire.  Police quickly extinguished the fire and emergency medical services transported him to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Criminal charges will be forwarded to the district attorney's office.
