Kenai, Alaska (AP) - The city council in Soldotna is considering a ban on using cell phones and other hand-held devices while driving in school zones.
The Peninsula Clarion reports the Alaska Legislature last year gave cities the ability to regulate cellphone use for motorists on school property.
Soldotna City Councilman Jordan Chilson says school principals see parents use cellphones as they get in line to pick up children. He says principals have seen cars nearly hitting students.
Councilman Tim Cashman questions the need for another ordinance and says signs at schools address the issue.
He says people can be shamed into good behavior in a parking lot easier than regulated with an obscure law.
