Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The story of a special litter of puppies was conveyed on Action Line Friday by officers of SOFA, the Southeast Alaska Organization for Animals.
Melanie Chamberlin is vice president of the animal welfare and rescue organization which is based in Juneau, Ketchikan and Sitka and comes to the aide of animals throughout Southeast Alaska.
Chamberlin told the story of people on Prince of Wales Island who were moving into their new home when they discovered a dog and her seven puppies abandoned in a fish box. She says SOFA took in the dogs and discovered that one of the pups is blind and deaf while two others are blind. In addition, the mother and the puppies had one of the worst cases of internal parasites and worms that Southeast had ever seen. They received treatment and are all doing well now, according to Chamberlin.
"The mother has found a home. So has pretty much all of the litter. One of the blind puppies has found a home," she said.
The other blind puppy and the one blind and deaf along with one of the healthy pups are awaiting donations.
