Skagway port lease in question

Skagway, Alaska (KINY) Skagway Assembly voted to suspend a memorandum of understanding and lease negotiations with the White Pass and Yukon railroad in a 4-2 vote.

The vote followed an executive session to discuss the interest from Holland America in the port.

Holland America recently indicated they wanted a role in the future of port operations.

Any lease must be approved by voters, they rejected a lease extension with White pass in 2015.

The current lease expires in 2023.  There are larger cruise ships planning to come to Skagway and some port modifications are needed.  Issues debated include a right of first refusal for the city to purchase the railroad.  Another issue is contamination the company is allegedly responsible for at the port.

The Skagway cruise dock is an operating ore dock.  It has stored and shipped raw gold, silver, copper and other metallic material from mines in Canada for decades.
