Sitka Community Hospital suspends surgeries

Sitka, Alaska (KINY) The City is in final stages of negotiations for a merger between Sitka Community and the Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium.

The Sitka Daily Sentinel said the decision to terminate surgery is a result of staff departures and a mandate from the city to limit operating expenses during the negotiations.

Minor surgical procedures will still take place at Mountainside Family Healthcare, the hospital's outpatient clinic.

Hospital officials said employee departures have created challenges to fully staff the hospital's programs.

They are also working with Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital so community members can have surgeries rescheduled in a short period of time.
