Search called off for seaman

Kodiak, Alaska (KINY) A 22-year old had fallen overboard on the motor vessel Challenge Prelude near Sand Point.

The search was suspended Monday after it covered 673 square miles and lasted for over 14 hours.  Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak aircrews coordinated the search.

The command center watchstanders received notification of the incident on Sunday afternoon.  The master of the Challenge Prelude reported that they proceed to sound a general emergency and conducted crew and space accountability.  The master then followed his track line back to where the crew member was last seen.  It also verified that all lifesaving equipment remained onboard the vessel.

Captain Darran McLenon said this was not how they wanted the search to conclude, "The Coast guard utilized various assets, while it saturated the search area in hopes of finding the 22 year old.  Our deepest condolences go out to his family and friends."
