Palmer, Alaska (KINY) Alex Caceda will receive $50,000 after the American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit on his behalf.
Caceda was held by the Palmer Police Department after his arrest in August, 2017. He claimed he was working security at a bar and tried to intervene in a fight. Responding officers arrested him rather than the assailants. He was detained for four days without a court hearing and later turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agents. They later released him without charges.
Caceda is an immigrant from Peru and is married to a U.S. Citizen. He is in the process of obtaining a work visa.
The Department settled the lawsuit. They agreed to apology, fork over the $50,000 and acknowledge that local police do not have the authority to detain people for federal immigration violations without a special warrant being issued.
