Planning commission forwards Gunakadeit Park lease to Assembly

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The CBJ Planning Commission voted 5-2 to forward to the Assembly a plan to lease Gunakadeit Park to Deckhand Dave’s on an annual basis.

The lease, if approved, would be for the development of a seasonal food court with two to three spaces.

Vice Chair Paul Voelkers and member Nathaniel Dye voted “no” on the lease.

Voelkers spoke out against the Gunakadeit Park lease, saying it would not match with the nature of Historic District uses, and that serving alcohol and providing security for the location overnight were also problematic for him. Dye spoke against the lease on the basis that it would not contribute to the long-term viability of the land for future uses.

Member Andrew Campbell recused himself on over a financial conflict.
