Juneau, Alaska (KINY) The Juneau Planning Commission voted Tuesday to recommend to the full Assembly the extension of the West Douglas Pioneer Road.
The Assembly will consider the recommendation on September 18th at 7 pm.
City Planner Tim Filstead said The Alaska Fish and Game Commission had questions about the impacts on the deer population.
"We received comments from the Alaska Fish and Game Wildlife Division. They stated they had concerns that the improved access would make things a lot easier for hunting the deer population. They noted it is quite a sensitive deep population and an important wintering habitat that does not get a lot of hunter pressure right now. They were concerned it could make it quite a bit easier for hunters to take deer out of that area."
The commission voted to recommend only non motorized vehicles on the single lane rock road. They cited safety concerns. The first phase of the road contained no such provision.
The State of Alaska provided a grant for the road project and bids on the first phase were lower than anticipated.
City officials expect the extension to cost between $400,000 and $600,000.
Advocates said it could lead to new growth potential for West Douglas which might include new homes and a US Coast Guard Station.
