New Alaska writer laureate to be named

    Juneau, Alaska (KINY) -Ernestine Saankalaxt Hayes has been the writer laureate since December 2016.

    The Juneau Empire reports Hayes had been scheduled to hold the title through last year.

    She is the author of books like "Blonde Indian: An Alaska Native Memoir" and "The Tao of Raven."

    She also is a professor for the University of Alaska Southeast.

    The Director of the Alaska State Council on the Arts, Andrea Noble-Pelant, said they hope to announce the new laureate by the end of March.  The position will run from through March 2021.

    The program is a partnership between the arts council and the Alaska Humanities Forum.
