Juneau, Alaska (KINY) All Alaska Natives will not pay tuition at Ilisagvik College next semester.
The Alaska Energy Desk reported that Pearl Bower, President of the College located in Utqiagvik, said the waiver of tuition could boost the student enrollment numbers at the college. The student body currently numbers around 700 students, and just more than half are natives.
The State University System has proposed five percent tuition hikes in each of the next two years.
The college offers many programs that include associate degrees, vocational certificates, bachelor's degrees in business administration and short-term workforce development courses.Tuition is just over $3,000 with a full course load each year.
The Bureau of Indian Education, will help the college defray some of the costs of the tuition waivers.
