Museum closed due to mortar shell

Haines, Alaska (KINY) A World War II-era mortar from Japan was discovered at the museum last week by a staff member sorting through collections at the Sheldon Museum and Cultural Center.

The Anchorage Daily News reported the museum was closed so authorities could determine if the mortar shell had been disarmed.

Museum Director Helen Alten said the museum was planning to use the shell in a World War II battle art exhibit but the paperwork did not indicate it had been deactivated.

It was donated by a World War II veteran from Haines 20 years ago.

Explosive experts were scheduled to visit the museum this week to resolve the issue.
