Washington, DC (KINY) Alaska US Senator Lisa Murkowski urged the Bureau of Indian Affairs to attack the opioid problem.
She said Alaska is in bad shape, that the drug problem is severe in native villages. and that the number of drug caused deaths continue to rise.
She said native villages also have an alcohol problem that shouldn't be ignored.
"Our very rural communities are being devastated by substance abuse and opioids. The rate of overdose deaths attributed to opioids has increased and in many cases exceeded the national average."
She spoke to the Senate Indian Affairs Committee.
