Mayor Weldon counsels calm in light of Governor's budget plan

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Juneau Mayor Beth Weldon continued to underscore the message from city hall on the Governor's proposed spending cuts while a guest on Action Line.

"Let's calm down.  Remember we're in a democracy.  Remember it's a debate and its the start of a long process.  We just have to hope that the lawmakers are  taking everything into consideration before they move forward."

The mayor said as proposed the Governor's budget would have a big impact.  The mayor said the impact to Juneau alone would amount to between
$17 Million to $18 Million.  "That would be a huge impact on Juneau and we're not the only community.  Every community would be impacted.  Even the very small ones would probably lose $70,000 to $80,000."

Most of the impact to Juneau would come in the area of education.  Funding from the fish tax and revenue sharing and municipal assistance would also be reduced.
