Mayor and ACLU try to work out mishandled sexual assault cases

    Nome, Alaska (KINY) - Many Alaska Native women claim the Nome Police Department hasn't thoroughly investigated certain crimes.

    KTVA News reported that the American Civil Liberties Union has requested more transparency and accountability from police.

    Native women claim sexual assault and rape cases have not received proper attention.

    Nome mayor Richard Beneville said he supports an ordinance proposed by the ACLU to create a public safety commission.

    There was no immediate time table for the introduction of the ordinance.
