Man Faked Death to Avoid Prison

Port Graham, Alaska (KINY) - Ryan Meganack, 35, had been charged with sexual abuse of an incapacitated woman.

Federal prosecutors said Meganack faked his own death in a boating accident to avoid prosecution. They also report his girlfriend was in on it.

The commissioner fishermen received two and a half years for the scheme.  He will also have to repay the US Coast Guard $384,261 they spent looking for him.

Investigators said Meganack swamped his boat, returned to Port Graham on another boat and hid out near his mother's home. He planned to flee Alaska after the search for his body was halted.

Meganack's girlfriend ruined the scheme when she told his grieving parents that he was still alive.

He received 15 years on the state sex abuse charges. He will serve a federal sentence of 15 months after his state sentence is finished.
