Man dead after shooting at trooper

Pilot Station, Alaska (KINY) A 27 year old man was shot and killed by Troopers on Thursday night.

Dwight Heckman, 27, had hidden in the woods in an attempt to elude capture after an earlier domestic incident.

A dispatch from Alaska State Troopers said the incident began as an assault complaint.  A female was allegedly struck, drug out into the street and shot at multiple times.  It appeared the woman was not hit by the gunfire.  The dispatch went on to report that when a trooper tried to contact the suspect at his residence the suspect pointed a handgun at the lawman.  After the trooper took cover, Mr. Heckman reported fled into the woods, causing a standoff with police.

A special response team arrived late Thursday afternoon and Mr. Heckman was killed after an exchange of gunfire.

The shooting is under investigation by the Alaska Bureau of Investigation.
