Sitka Radio Center's Larry Snider reports on the latest in local baseball:
"It was one “heck” of a game Thursday night at Moeller Park. 5-2 Sitka High hosting Juneau Douglas. Sitka High struck for two runs in the bottom of the first with a Caleb Suarez single, a Dayton Cropper single, a clutch RBI single from Braden Case and the Wolves picked up another run on an error to go up 2 to nothing.
From there it turned into a pitcher’s duel with Bears pitcher Bryce Swofford and Wolves pitcher Kyle Fitzsimmons battling the rest of the way. The Bears got a run in the fourth with a Luke Mallinger RBI single, then Juneau Douglass tied it up 2-2 in the fifth inning with Alex Muir knocking in Donovan McCurley – who’d drawn a one out walk.
So – game tied – 7th inning. Swofford walks the first two batters in the bottom of the 7th – and Quin Gist came in to pitch in relief. Dayton Cropper then delivered a game winning single – a line drive into right field to score the Wolves speedy Centerfielder Josh Young – and the Sitka High Wolves get the 3-2 win!
The Wolves Kyle Fitzsimmons pitched 7 innings, scattered three hits, struck out 10 with just three walks. The Bears pitcher Kyle Swofford ended up with 7 innings pitched, scattered 7 hits, struck out 3 in the loss.
The Juneau Douglass JV squad plays the Sitka High j-vee’s at 1PM today (Friday) followed by a double header between the Sitka High and JD High varsity with games at 4PM and 7PM. Both games can be heard live on 1230 KIFW in Sitka."
