Kito not seeking re-election

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Juneau Representative Sam Kito is now saying he will not seek re-election.

His decision is rooted in the recommendation by the State Officers Compensation Commission to eliminate per diem for Juneau based lawmakers.

The Legislature could have rejected the recommendation, but the deadline for that has passed.  He told News of the North that his decision is really a fiscal decision for himself.

When asked if his decision was irreversible, Kito said he didn't want the issue of his compensation or Juneau compensation to become an issue of distraction in budget discussions.

In addition to downtown Juneau and Douglas, Kito's district includes Haines, Skagway, Gustavus and Klukwan.
